Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to contest particular rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
